God Bless Professor Bainbridge

He discussing a pet peeve of mine: the Serial Comma.

Much like capitalizing the word president when referring to thePresident, I refuse to abandon the serial comma. In fact, I have great disputes with a colleague and, when he takes out the serial comma, I frequent go back in, redo the final draft, sign it, and then get him to sign it.

The serial comma serves a purpose. Trendy types may abandon it, but the abandon solid culture with it.

Understand your preference for the comma, but why do you abhor the "y" in they?

Hear hear! I've never understood why one should not put in that comma. And it should be there for the simple, and usually scale-tipping reason: it adds to clarity.
